Investment Scams in Malaysia: How to Identify & Avoid Them
What is an investment scam?
An investment scam is a fraudulent scheme where individuals are deceived into investing money with promises of high or guaranteed returns, often with little or no risk. These scams involve deceptive practices intended to mislead investors for financial gain.

How do investment scams happen?
Investment scams commonly occur through social media, messaging apps, fraudulent websites that closely resemble legitimate ones, and impersonation of legitimate financial institutions. Scammers often gain victims’ trust by promising high returns, creating urgency, and use fake dashboards to show profits.
Common Investment Scam Tactics in Malaysia
- Messaging apps/platforms
Fake investment groups show fabricated profits and testimonials to gain trust. Victims are then asked to invest more or pay additional fees before withdrawals can be made.
- Impersonating banks or licensed firms
Scammers use fake logos, websites, documents, or social media profiles to impersonate trusted financial institutions and convince victims that the investment is legitimate.
- Social media ads
“Get rich quick” or “low-risk, high-return” investment opportunities advertised on social media that direct victims to fraudulent platforms and fake investment schemes.
- Romance + investment scams
Scammers build trust through online relationships before introducing investment opportunities and encouraging victims to transfer funds to fraudulent platforms.
Impacts of Investment Scams
Victims may suffer:
- financial losses resulting from funds being transferred to fraudulent entities.
- identity theft where personal or financial information is misused by scammers.
- emotional distress including anxiety, stress, and loss of confidence.
- loss of trust due to victims becoming less trusting of financial institutions, investment offers, and people who recommended the investment.
In many cases, funds transferred to scammers are difficult or impossible to recover. Therefore, it is essential to conduct proper due diligence and verify the legitimacy of any investment opportunity before committing funds.

Safety Tips
In Malaysia, regulatory authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Securities Commission (SC) maintain alert lists of unauthorized entities to help protect consumers from potential investment scams
Before making any investment, consider the following precautions:
- Verify investment legitimacy with regulators: Check the Investor Alert List published by BNM and SC websites to confirm that the company/investment scheme is properly licensed, registered or approved by the relevant regulator.
- Avoid guaranteed return offers that sound too good to be true: Becautious of promises of high or risk-free returns that are unrealistic or not aligned with market norms.
- Do not transfer funds to personal or unverified third-party accounts: Ensure that all payments are made only to accounts that match the licensed or approved entity. Always check the recipient’s name before performing a transaction.
- Be cautious of unsolicited offers: Especially those received via cold calls, WhatsApp, social media, or emails, and that create urgency or pressure to act quickly.
